The importance of setting goals

Jason Murphy,
Sunset Funeral Home,
Directory of Family Services
Whether you're a vault dealer, funeral home or cemetery, setting goals is an all too familiar task. How many of our goals are attainable and met at the end of the year? We usually set them too high, which makes them impossible to reach.

Are you ever curious what the "other guys" are doing? With my sales department, we live by three simple rules:
  1. Set your goals within arm's-reach - Whether it's customer service, product quality or sales, when a goal is set too high, staff members can become discouraged; and when it is set too low, they can become lazy. Making a realistic goal is important to creating an energetic and motivated staff.
  2. Narrow your goals to a specific product or service - By focusing each team member, you create a clearer goal and can track their results more easily. Plus, this allows the staff member to have a better understanding of their job requirements.
  3. Incentivize your staff throughout the year - An end of year bonus is the typical route, but there is great value in monthly and quarterly incentives as well. This keeps your staff hungry and working hard.
Keep in mind that a motivated staff is a successful staff. Setting achievable goals can help fuel the fire and make for a prosperous and successful year. For tips on setting goals, email me at jasonm@sunsetfuneralhome.com.
