Boost burial vault sales in 2014

Drew Edwards,
Sunset Funeral Homes,
General Manager
At Trigard University, we are fortunate enough to meet with funeral directors from across the country. At every session, the Trigard team comes out learning just as much as our guests.

Our goal is for every Trigard University graduate to walk away with at least one good idea that they can implement in their own funeral home. Often that opportunity comes when presenting burial vault options to families. Funeral directors have been groomed to spend a majority of their time focusing on the casket while in the selection room; but very little time and effort is placed on the burial vault.
Are you struggling with offering a full line of burial vaults? Sunset Funeral Home is Trigard's "test kitchen," where we test out new selection techniques. We invite you to attend Trigard University to experience the different strategies at Sunset Funeral Home and what's working in our market.

For more information about Trigard University, call Customer Service at 800.637.1992.

Happy Holidays

Sheryl Baumeister,
Human Resources
By this time of year, the joy of the holidays should be shining through everyone, instead our expectations to find the perfect gift is making us stress and lose sight of the real meaning of the season. Before another Christmas passes us by, take time to share an experience with someone you love; bake some cookies, go to a movie or visit with someone who may be struggling this holiday season; perhaps from a loss or just missing someone who couldn't make it home for the holidays.

You might not be able to afford to make a huge donation to a charity or buy the best gift for your children, but we can all smile at a stranger, pay for someone's meal behind us in the fast food line or drop some change in a donation cup. Let's remember to count our blessings and not our troubles; and not get so busy that we forget to care for one another. You never know whose life you may make an impact on. Make this year's resolution be to practice random acts of kindness all year long.
May your holidays be filled with love and joy. Happy Holidays!

To ensure maximum butyl tape adhesion, use our seal groove cleaner to remove any unwanted substance in the grooves of your vaults before application. If you have ever applied any type of weatherization products to your windows at home, you know the first step is to clean the seals thoroughly to ensure a good seal. Trigard's seal groove cleaner does the same for your vaults.

Meet Deb Westfahl

by Ryan Snyder

Deb Westfahl,
Packaging and Final Assembly
Deb has been with Trigard for approximately five years and works in our packaging area. She is responsible for cleaning, inspecting, and preparing Serenity® infant/ child casket vaults and urn vaults for packaging; assists with monthly inventory counts, production reporting, packaging our wall displays and printing of our Appliqués®.

I asked Deb what she most enjoyed about working at Trigard, and she said, "I enjoy helping people, and I feel that is what Trigard is all about."

Deb takes the quality of the product being sent out seriously and is careful to thoroughly inspect every piece to ensure you and the families you serve are satisfied.  She understands the importance of our customers and values their relationships.  "I love when I am able to meet the customers. In the last five years, those are the days that stand out."

Thinking about the young lives our Serenity products help honor, it can be difficult to prepare and package these products. As I talked with Deb, she shared how she deals with the emotions. "As I prepare the Serenity's, especially when I place the interior and teddy bear, my thoughts and prayers are always with the parents. I pray for comfort and strength and that they will draw close to Jesus, who now embraces their special gift that they had for such a short time. I have one daughter, and I am very blessed every day. I cherish the time I spend with her."

Deb is one of the many employees that we have that understands the magnitude and significance of what we produce each day; it is so much more than producing a part. We have the privilege of making a product that will protect and care for someone's loved one. Remember why we are here every day, what we are doing and how much of an impact we have on the families we serve.

Annual sales review deepens customer relationship

Jeff Miller,
Vice President of
Business Development
As a funeral home, do you pause once a year to review your numbers, including vault sales? As a vault dealer, are you an active part of that review? As clients we all want to know how we are doing; are we growing, are we maintaining, or are we declining? As a supplier, you can provide this important information to your clients.

It is as simple as compiling a list of units broken down by product mix for the year. I think our vault dealers will discover that funeral homes will be very interested and appreciative when you, their supplier, take the initiative to share their results and performance.

If you are a funeral home owner or manager, you can conduct this kind of annual review as well. When you look at your product mix for the year, consider calling your dealer to discuss what you learned.

After your review, you may find that you need to adjust burial vault presentation techniques, retail price points or showroom displays. We are happy to support you through this process.

Call us at 800.637.1992 to talk about your options.

Trigard offers plastic casket risers to make lowering metal interiors easy. These rests are clear, acrylic, donut-shaped inserts that work with vaults with metal interiors like the Reflection® and Elite®. These vaults have flat interiors, as opposed to risers, making it difficult to remove the casket lowering straps. Our plastic risers give just enough space to easily maneuver the lowering straps and come with all metal kits, but additional sets can be ordered.

Trigard's purchasing puts customers first

Stuart McDaniels,
Materials Manager
The famous Stephen Covey phrase, "begin with the end in mind," is a great way for us to think of every new task or challenge we begin. "What do I want to accomplish?" or "What will be my end result?" This thought process keeps us focused on what's important and concentrates our efforts on achieving the end objective.

Since purchasing is usually the beginning of the materials flow in most companies, it is important for the purchasing department to be familiar with the end goal; meeting the customer's needs and expectations. I feel it is critical for the purchasing department at Trigard to put the customer first when making decisions regarding such things as product stocking, inventory requirements, new product sourcing, costing and negotiation.

For those of you I have yet to meet, I look forward to hearing about your companies challenges, successes, and more importantly, what we can do for you to help you grow and succeed. To those of you I've had the pleasure of meeting; I appreciate your input and ideas.
Call me at 800.637.1992 to discuss your customer focused strategies.

Happy Thanksgiving

Donna Walthall-Darby,
Chief Financial Officer
For most, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season. But, it feels like it starts earlier and earlier every year with the pressure to start Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving.

Our society lives in a constant rush and flurry of work, work, work, that we don't realize we are overlooking a perfect holiday to spend with those we love. Take a deep breath, slow down and take the time to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Try to avoid the stress of the holidays. Sometimes, around this time of year, I will try to get some exercise. Being active releases those feel good endorphins and puts us in better spirits. Laugh more. When you laugh it lightens your mental load and is infectious to those around you. And most importantly, don't over exert yourself. You might want to be a part of every aspect of the holiday season, but you just can't. It is okay to say no once in a while.

On behalf of my family and the Trigard staff, thank you for your support throughout this past year. We are extremely grateful and consider you one of our many blessings. We wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving.

The billion dollar idea

Rich Darby,
Chief Operating Officer
I recently had the honor of meeting with one of the top business consultants in the world who works on a level of business I cannot even imagine. He deals with companies who gross hundreds of billions of dollars a year, a figure that most of us will never see in our lifetime.

Have you ever been told that having a million dollar idea was a waste? Well, the man that I had the pleasure to speak with said exactly that, and I think he is on to something. He explained to me that if you are meeting with the president of a multi-billion dollar company, you better bring a billion dollar idea; if you don't, you are wasting his time and money.

How often do we sit in our own businesses and waste time and money with ideas that bring us little return on investment? This conversation taught me a lot, but most importantly, it taught me to start focusing on the bigger picture. My days of multiple smaller projects netting little revenue are being put on the back burner. Instead, I will start focusing my energy on a single project that will make a larger impact on our business. It's time we simplify and start working smarter, one project at a time.
Our conversation was one of the best of my career, and a very eye-opening experience. It made me take a deep breath and realize how truly blessed my family and I have been. Thank you all for choosing Trigard products. We deeply appreciate and value your business.

Thinking about offering Trigard's Serenity® casket vaults?

Funeral homes and cemeteries across the country count on these products to provide families with one last opportunity to protect their little one and honor them with all of the love, care and security possible.

Here’s what people are saying about the Serenity casket vaults. Are you using Serenity casket vaults? Let us know why you choose them in the comments below. Haven’t switched to Serenity? Call 800.637.1992 for details and pricing.

“Serenity casket vaults offer protection to a grieving family. Families appreciate the security of the butyl tape seal. Since it is a combination casket vault, it saves families money, and still has an attractive warmth.”

Lynda Watts, President
Watts Vault and Monument Co.

“Our specialized team used over 600 Serenity casket vaults to conduct a recent cemetery relocation program. They were manageable for the archaeological team and durable enough for the replacement cemeteries. They presented a more viable option with their ability to function as both a casket and vault as they eliminated the use of concrete grave liners. Most importantly, they provided the family with an assurance that the program utilized an industry standard sealed burial container that respected their loved ones given the circumstances. With the reoccurrence of historic cemetery relocations, Serenity products represents both an effective and respectful option for recasketing and reinterment.“

Give your ads new life

Julia Sullivan,
Creative Director
The Trigard marketing team's job is two-fold: we raise brand awareness by communicating to you, members of our industry, and we create materials that you can use to communicate to your customers, the families you serve. It makes sense that we have specific tactics for each audience. We speak to funeral professionals about providing value and increasing revenue; we speak to consumers about the importance of remembering their loved ones.

Even so, many of the materials we produce for funeral professionals can be quickly adapted for consumers. Ads about the Healing Tree®, invoice stuffers featuring the Serenity® infant and child casket vaults and educational videos can be ready for you to share with the families you serve with just a few tweaks. We can even personalize the materials, adding your name and contact information as the call-to-action.

The next time you see something from Trigard, consider if it might be a message you'd like to share with your customers. If so, give us a call at 800.637.1992 or email marketing@trigard.com. We'd be happy to put those materials to work for you. This article originally appeared in Trigard Tuesdays, our weekly electronic newsletter featuring information for the funeral industry. Embrace the price question

Jason Murphy,
Director of Family Services,
Sunset Funeral Home
As Director of Family Services at Sunset Funeral Homes, also owned by the Darby family, I've seen preneed counselors struggle to respond to a family's objections about price. Families often say, "Your prices are way too high!" or "It costs that much for an hour service?" Instead of hoping the price question doesn't come up in an appointment, a counselor should expect and embrace the question. Why? Because most responsible people watch their finances. So logically, someone who questions price could be a financially responsible person and is likely to understand the importance of preplanning.

When a family questions price, don't look at it as complaining, instead, view it as an invitation to help them understand value. At Sunset, whether we are talking about funeral services, bronze memorials, or burial vaults, we demonstrate value by explaining why these selections are different from other purchasing decisions. You could say to a family that this preneed funeral purchase is the most important purchase of their lifetime because of the certainty that someone will have to pay for the funeral. These types of statements open the door to discuss the value and benefits of pre-planning.

Price is what you pay today, and cost is what you pay for the rest of your life. Price and cost are not always equal. The loss of value that comes from a cheaper price can create a lifetime cost that may never be fully paid. We can easily embrace price questions when you know the value of the healing that pre-planning provides families

Trigard Tuesdays: Employee Spotlight

The team members I have in manufacturing are my most valuable assets. Over the next few months, I will be introducing the employees who provide you with Trigard products. - Ryan Snyder, Plant Manager

Linda Pasco

Linda has been part of Trigard's Aegean® packaging department for 10 years. She is responsible for packaging assembly parts and inspecting final components for all Aegean vaults. Linda's versatility allows her to also help in the shipping and metal departments.

When I asked Linda what she likes most about her work she said, "I enjoy working for a family-owned and operated company. The Darby family is a joy to work for. They are very caring and considerate to their employees as well as their customers."

Linda takes great pride in her work. She believes quality is the key to a great product. Share shared, "I want provide a product that I am proud of and would use for my own family."

Over the years, Linda has gained a great deal of knowledge about customer preferences and ordering patterns. When discussing her commitment to service she said, "Customers are why I'm here. Their needs and expectations are priority one." Linda always looks forward to meeting customers when they pick up their orders or are on a plant tour.

Linda is a valuable part of the Trigard team. She understands how important you, our customers, are to us. She takes great care and pride in the work she performs for us and for you.

Greetings from Austin

We are halfway through the 2013 NFDA Convention and Expo in Austin. What a great event  has been so far! On Sunday, Linda Darby and Rich Darby joined Alan Creedy for a spirited educational session called "Family Business Disputes: Court Is in Session." The three acted out some sticky scenarios that the attendees found all too familiar. But instead of retreating to their separate corners, Alan helped mediate the disputes, giving the audience members valuable tools to take home.

Our Trigard booth on the Expo floor has attracted many great questions about our products. As expected, there has been lots of attention around our memorial rocks and boulders. Attendees are always impressed by the quality, versatility and light weight of these products.

Product spotlight: Serenity® Remembrance Bear ceremony

We unveiled a new product at the NFDA Convention and Expo. The Serenity Remembrance Bear ceremony is inspired by the success of the interactive, graveside Healing Tree ceremony. After the special Serenity Remembrance Bear poem is read, friends and family take a teddy bear Memory Ring® as a keepsake. It's available for all sizes and colors of our Serenity casket/vaults and provides families a special way to stay connected to their little one.

A set of five rings and Appliqué are only $10. Call 800.798.4900 to order.

Have it your way

A fast food giant may claim "have it your way" as their slogan, but the creative team at Trigard makes it happen for vault dealers, funeral homes and cemetery offices every day.
Our marketing solutions are modern, tested and geared toward helping families make their best decision. But their real strength is the ease of customization.

I talk to customers about these customizations every week, and they're always delighted by the answers. Can you change the color on the tent setup photo? Of course. Can you show only three colors of the Aegean®? You bet. Can you help me figure out how to make this family-friendly? Absolutely!

Granted, there are a few things we can't compromise on. We have to present products consistently and maintain our graphic standards, but you might be surprised how much flexibility we have.

But what if you aren't interested in designing your own displays? I'd be delighted to talk you about our tried and true standard displays and posters.

Call me at 800.637.1992 to get started.

Trigard Tuesdays: Community events build relationships

As business owners, we should give back and support the communities we serve.

Throughout the year, we host several customer appreciation events through our funeral homes in Danville and the surrounding areas that we serve.

Every summer we have ice cream socials and hire local talent to sing by the beautiful Swan Pond in our cemetery. We also have free hot dog luncheons with drawings and prizes. This fall, we are sponsoring a nature walk and will be serving donuts and apple cider from our local apple orchard.

We see great value in community events. Does it cost us a little bit? Sure it does, but you cannot put a price on the relationships we build.

How are you showing the community your appreciation? Post your ideas on our Facebook page.

Trigard dealers are "going green"

Many Trigard dealers are no longer disposing their liner pallets. Instead, they are returning them to be reused.

Not only are dealers helping the environment, but they are also earning a rebate.

Since the program started in 2010. In the past year and a half our dealers have returned nearly 900 pallets. That's more than $6,500 in rebates!

Trigard is constantly striving to be a little more "green".

The battle of price versus value

Have you ever asked yourself what makes you decide to change brands or suppliers?

As consumers, we are targeted daily to change our thought patterns and to focus on new brands and products being offered.

The things we see value in are often the same things our customers do. Thinking that all customers are solely price driven is often furthest from the truth.

Many times, customers don't choose the cheapest price; they choose the product or brand that gives them the best bang for the buck!  They choose what they believe to be the best value.

When I make a large purchase, cheapest doesn't get it. For me, value wins every time! Does value prevail for you and your customers? Tell me by posting your story on our Facebook page.

Handley Precast Systems honors Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew

Handley Precast Systems was honored to help memorialize the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew who lost their lives in Arizona fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 20, 2013.

With Trigard's help, Handley Precast provided lined, sealed, Trigard burial vaults for this brave crew, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.

We applaud Steve and Kelly Handley for their efforts to give the Granite Memorial Hotshot Crew a dignified farewell.

Ideal Burial Vault Plant Cerification

Ideal Burial Vault is proud to announce they have been awarded NCBVA plant certification. Greg Tilley explained why he decided to seek certification. "Some of my competitors are certified, and customers have asked about it. Everyone knows we make the strongest vaults in the area. So we decided to get the official certification to put it in writing."

As expected, the Estate™ passed with flying colors and showed no hairline cracking. In addition to receiving the certification itself, Greg shared how surprised he was to learn so much about vaults in general as well as some of the technical aspects of vault manufacturing. Congratulations Ideal Burial Vault and Greg Tilley.
